Welcome to the APRIL 2008 newsletter from www.rebeccaswan.com

Show Time

Well it’s a bumper newsletter with my 3 exhibitions that you can see if you happen to be in Wellington or Whangarei.

TheNewDowse (APRIL - AUGUST)

The excitement is mounting as we’re less than 2 weeks out from the Assume Nothing exhibition, celebrating gender diversity, at TheNewDowse. This features my photographs and Kirsty MacDonald’s film. Opening night is 11th April 2008 8pm, which is invite only I’m afraid. However, it’s then open to the public from April 12th until 31st August 2008 so there’s plenty of time for you to get your self there.

THE WHANGAREI ART MUSEUM (APRIL- MAY)

“It’s our rare and exquisite surrender” my work from 1997, was exhibited in February in “The Language of Touch”, a group exhibition at Mark Hutchins gallery.  It will be exhibited again at the Whangarei Art Museum as part of an exhibition titled The Hand as Subject curated by the museum’s director, Scott Potham, in association with Mark Hutchins Gallery, Wellington. This exhibition will open at The Whangarei Art Museum on the 7th of April and run through to the 25th May 2008.

MARK HUTCHINS GALLERY (JUNE)

For the last 3 months I’ve enjoyed inhabiting the strange world of miniature clay models with tiny furniture and odd pets.  It’s been a lot of fun and produced some surprises, in my new work

Fabricated Truths will be exhibited at Mark Hutchins gallery opening June 1st – June 26th.  It is a series of mixed media and photography works, printed on a beautiful metallic paper in editions of 10.  They will be showing alongside some one-off sculptural works that are so new the paint is drying!

This new series explores what it means to reveal the essence of oneself to another. The passion of discovery, the tenderness of vulnerability, the desire to be seen, the minutiae of domesticity, the isolation of jealousy, the fear of risk , the peace of trust, the limits of attachment, the transcendence of the physical.

“I was nervous showing you my favourite artwork,  I wanted you to see what I saw.” Mixed media and photography by Rebecca Swan 2008.

“We slowly discovered we could make magic together without getting hurt.”
Mixed media and photography by Rebecca Swan 2008.

“We recounted our dreams to see if they had travelled across the pillows.”
Mixed media and photography by Rebecca Swan 2008.
