The Exquisite Wound

All Hearts Are Sacred, 2016

The Exquisite Wound is an interdisciplinary installation by Rebecca made in collaboration with composer Charlie Ha, engineer Peter Swan, light artist Peter Stoneham, and computer coder Damon Partington. The works contemplate how we relate to the disappearance of our physical bodies, which begs the question, “what are we without them?” Swan was diagnosed with cancer at age 23 and that formative experience continues to reverberate through her work.

The exhibition includes twenty photographs, a two channel video with composition by Charlie Ha, a stop frame animation and a bespoke smoke-bubble machine. In 2016 The Exquisite Wound was granted the S+ART award for art technology and science collaboration and in 2017 won Rebecca the Fulbright- Wallace Art Award.

Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery first presented the exhibition for the Auckland Arts Festival 2017 and it is touring Aotearoa New Zealand until 2019.

Limited edition C-type prints on archival metallic paper are available from Whitespace. View exhibition history.
